Our Programs & Classes
Students and enthusiasts of Karate have many reasons for their interest in this and other martial art styles. Some are drawn to the physical fitness and weight-loss aspects of training. Others seek to add discipline and self control to their lives. While still others are concerned about safety and self-defense.
Whether you are interested in our programs for mental or physical well being, Stephen Oliver's Mile High Karate offers a number of programs that will fit your developmental needs and your busy schedule as well.
Pre-School Karate Samurai
The word that comes to mind when looking at this class is "cute". This is for students 3-5 yrs. of age and it is amazing to see what they do in their little uniforms. One of the most joyful aspects of being a martial arts teacher is that you get to watch the students grow up in the school which gives the feeling of belonging to a family. Many students who started in this program are still training 9-10 years later! This is an excellent program to help little ones control their energy, learn to follow structure, listening skills, social skills, control over their anger and emotions, language acquisition and having fun! Self Defense is taught in a non frightening and easy to learn format that will plant seeds for later on in the student's life. Martial arts is used to help them with counting, doing techniques to the alphabet, safety awareness and altruistic behavior. It helps them prepare for kindergarten and the demands of life in first grade.

Martial Arts Training
This describes the basic training program which introduces the student to the wonderful world of martial arts. Students train 2x's a week. Students in our school are standing in front of an ocean of knowledge. The "waves" are the materials they are currently studying. There are waves deep out in the ocean that are not seen yet but are making its way to the shore. This is what happens in karate. The ocean represents a vast amount of knowledge and the waves represent that knowledge being taught and absorbed by the students over time. The students in the martial arts training are studying one art and thus one ocean of knowledge. It is highly advised that once a student is acclimated in this program they advance into the black belt study class.

Black Belt Study
Most schools of higher learning give options for more challenging levels of study. For example, even most high schools offer Algebra and advanced placement algegra. The black belt study class is like advanced placement algebra. It is offered to challenge students to become more than ordinary. Students in this program are studying before 2 "oceans" of knowledge and it is like studying as a double major. The curriculum consists of both Shorin-Ryu karate and Goju-Ryu karate and students earn two black belts. If attaining a black belt is special this is beyond special. Students may train up to 3 x's a week and having a double major allows the teachers to compare and contrast these two major systems of karate. This adds a wealth of knowledge and ability by employing this strong method of teaching.

Advanced Degrees Program
The Advanced Degrees Program is for those who have attained their first black belt. It consists of junior and adult black belts and is the strongest program in our school. Since it was incorported we have seen a huge quality improvement that has spread to all the programs our school offers. Students may train up to 3x's a week if they wish and they are pursuing a triple major in Shorin-Ryu karate, Goju-Ryu karate and kobudo(weapons). It is highly recommended that once a student reaches black belt he or she move into this program as it provides a strong incentive to continue martial arts training. This is important. It is true that a black belt will open doors for students the rest of their life, but over time discontinued study will result in an erosion of self defense ability, flexibility, the feeling of being a martial artist, the type of confidence unique to martial arts training that prevents others from intimidating you and a loss of a host of other benefits. It is especially important that students continue to train through their adolescent years in order to help them overcome the challenges that will come during this turbulant time period in their life. The other important time period to continue to train through is mid life which poses another emotional upheaval that can cause problems.
